Triathlon: Sprint & Super Sprint

Swim Course

Sprint = 1 lap / Super Sprint = 1 lap / Tri Start/TS1 = out and back

Unforgettable Open-Water Swim

Get your adrenaline pumping with a deep-water start into the dramatic Staffin Bay. Swim alongside towering dolerite cliffs, talus slopes, and Jurassic outcrops for a truly unique triathlon experience.

Safety First:

Your safety is our priority. We'll have full water safety cover with two motorized safety boats and six kayakers on hand throughout the 750m (Sprint) or 300m (Super Sprint/Novice) swim.

Course Details:

  • Anti-clockwise, out-and-back route with exit into transition.
  • Clear, clean water with minimal impact from tides or wind.
  • Two large inflatable buoys marking the course (stay to your left).
  • Water temperature around 14°C - wetsuits are mandatory.

Sprint Triathlon - start time 10am

(750m swim, 20km cycle, 5km run) 

T1 will be at the slipway where triathletes will mount their bike and head up to the main road turning left towards Staffin/Portree. Triathletes will stay on the main road, A885, passing Loch Mealt, continuing to Lealt Fall and a turning point using the turning before the large car park. They will return and retrace their route to the Community Hall for T2. 

The run leg will take them from the Community Hall to the Slipway and back. 

Super Sprint & Novice Triathlon - start time 10.40am

(300m swim, 8.5km cycle, 2.5km run)

This Super Sprint & Novice Triathlon is for both experienced, novice, and Youth (age 15-16). As with the Sprint Triathlon, triathletes will mount their bikes and head up to the main road, turning left towards Staffin/Portree. Kilt Rock car park is the turning point where they will turn and retrace their route back to the Community Hall for T2.

The 2.5 kilometre run leg will be an out and back on the pavement.

TS2 (age 11-12) & TS3 (age 13-14) 

(300m swim, 5.1km cycle, 1.8km run)

The cycle will be three loops from the Slipway to the beach, and then a cycle up to the A855 for T2. The run leg will be two laps from the junction of the A855 to the finish area. 

Tri Start (age 8) & TS1 (age 9-10)

(100m swim, 1.5km cycle, 600m run)

The cycle leg is from the Slipway to the junction of the A855 and T2, and the run leg will be from the A855 junction to the finish. 

For safety, triathletes will do their cycle on closed roads along An Corran Beach and run on pavements.

Triathlon Transition

T1 & T2 are split with T1 at the Slipway to the sea, and T2 at Staffin Community Hall - approximately 2.5km apart. 

Triathlon Teams

Both the Sprint & Super Sprint/Novice distances are open to teams of three. Each team member completes a discipline in succession. You must inform the staff at registration that you are a team entry as you will have specific instructions for handing the chip between team members.

10k Run Route - start time 11am

Challenging 10k Run

The 10k run offers a scenic journey that will test your limits. Here's what you can expect:

  • Start: A855/Slipway junction.
  • Initial section: Closed road to the Slipway (be sure to run on the LEFT side).
  • Open road: Single-track road leading up the Quiraing (stay LEFT, with ample space for cars to overtake).
  • Marshals: All road crossings and turns will be fully marshalled for your safety.
  • Route map: Available for viewing at registration and on our Facebook page.

Race Day Information

Full Race Day Information will be emailed to all entrants pre-event, giving detailed event information.  It is a condition of entry to this event that you participate according to the instructions in the event information. Timings may be subject to change. Registration available on the day, or on Friday 30 August 5.30pm to 6.30pm at Staffin Hall.  Should you be unable to register to pick up your race number and timing chips, you can authorise someone to do this on your behalf. They will however need to present an Authorisation Form with a copy of your ID.  You can download this form here:

Spectators: Staffin is a perfect location for spectators with viewing from the shore and along the roadside.  Its important to note that if you are spectating at Staffin Bay, it's track dash for the able bodied only to get to the finish line in time to see friends or family completing the course.

Accommodation:  The Isle of Skye has limited accommodation options and you are advised to immediately make a reservation if staying on the island which fills up quickly. Charitable Giving

Surplus profits from the Staffin Triathlon will be gifted to Staffin Community Hall. We welcome donations at registration towards the running costs of Portree Youth Club. All participants have the opportunity to offset their carbon footprint by donating £6 to plant a tree in our Skye Tree Grove as part of a rewilding of the Cairngorms project.
