Tuesday 6th June 2023

Leading Scottish salmon producer Bakkafrost Scotland is to continue its relationship with the Isle of Skye Half Marathon 2023, which will include a new 10k event for the first time this year.

Saturday’s (10 June) event will see the introduction of the 10K event, which is a chip timed run starting from the 11k Half Marathon marker following a single-track closed road through brooding, dramatic and spectacular countryside.  Runners will enjoy breath-taking views of the world-famous Skye landscape.

This year, Skye Events are supporting mental health and welfare charities, with the Skye Half Marathon and the 10K fundraising for Skye & Lochalsh Mental Health Association and Samaritans Scotland West Highlands & Skye Project. During registration runners have the option to donate with every penny going towards these essential Island lifeline agencies.  Samaritans Scotland will have a stand at Portree High School on the day of the event to highlight their new Skye & Lochalsh service and the vial work they do for suicide prevention in the area.

Skye Cancer Care and Skye & Lochalsh Citizens Advice Bureau are also partner charities for Skye Events.  This year the Skye Events Community Fund will donate £1000 to each organisation to help with the work they carry out in the community.

Fiona Baker, race director Skye Events said: "The Skye Half Marathon & 10k is the major race in the Skye Events calendar. It would be impossible for us to stage such a large event without the support of Bakkafrost which is an ideal partner as champions of food sustainability and their pillars for a healthy living agenda.  They enable us to provide a platform for charities such as Samaritans Scotland to raise awareness of suicide prevention, particularly in remote areas such as Skye. With multi-agencies and the community coming together in this way we are stronger together.  We look forward to the race being a big success and welcoming runners from home and from across the UK."

Ian Laister, managing director Bakkafrost Scotland added: “This is a very important occasion on the island and we are delighted to continue our sponsorship agreement with the Skye Half Marathon.  The mix of spectacular scenery, the addition of the new 10k feature and the support for local charities all add up to an event which continues to mark its mark for everyone involved.

“The Bakkafrost Scotland team wishes everyone involved the best of luck for Saturday’s race.”
